The Marvel and DC 2017 Calendar

2016 was a huge year for geek culture. With blockbuster movies like Deadpool, Batman v Superman, and Captain America: Civil War, the bar was set high for superhero flicks from here on out. Now that 2017 has arrived, here’s a list of the upcoming films and TV shows from Marvel and DC that will surely blow our collective minds once they hit theaters.

February 8: Legion


What we know so far:

  • At this point, the show executives have been vague on whether or not the show will connect with the X-Men universe, with some hinting at it being on a parallel universe while others say that it will relate to X-Men films at a certain capacity.
  • Legion or David Haller is a schizophrenic man who discovers that his condition might be a result of mutation.
  • In the comics, each of the personalities that inhabit his mind has their own abilities, giving him access to limitless power.


March 3: Logan


What we know so far:

  • The film is loosely based on the comic book arc, Old Man Logan.
  • It swill be set in a future where the X-Men are dead.
  • Wolverine’s healing factor is deteriorating, causing him to age and leaving him vulnerable to his enemies.
  • Professor Xavier is still alive, but is dealing with Alzheimer’s disease.
  • Wolverine is trying to rescue a female clone of himself named Laura Kinney.
  • In the comics, Laura is X-23 and is currently taking up the mantle of Wolverine after his comic book death.
  • The main antagonist is Nathaniel Essex as teased in the post-credits scene of X-Men: Apocalypse. He is also known as Mister Sinister, one of the X-Men’s classic enemies.


March 17: Iron Fist


What we know so far:

  • This is the fourth standalone Marvel/Netflix series and will feature Danny Rand, master of the Iron Fist, who returns to New York to reclaim his family’s legacy.
  • Finn Jones of Game of Thrones fame will portray Danny Rand.
  • The show will connect to other Netflix/Marvel shows.
  • Colleen Wing, portrayed by Jessica Henwick (also a Game of Thrones alum) will make her debut.
  • Rosario Dawson and Carrie-Anne Moss will reprise their roles as Claire Temple and Jeri Hogarth, respectively.
  • Daredevil villain, Madame Gao will also return, further fueling the rumor that she is actually the Crane Mother, an Iron Fist villain in the comics.
  • The main antagonist has not been revealed.


May 5: Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2


What we know so far:

  • The original team will be back: Star-Lord, Gamora, Drax, Rocket Racoon, and Baby Groot.
  • New teammates will include: Yondu, Nebula, and Mantis
  • The team will revolve around the cosmic adventures of the team as they figure out the truth behind Star-Lord’s parentage.
  • Director James Gunn has revealed that Ego The Living Planet, played by Kurt Russell is Star-Lord’s father


June 2: Wonder Woman


What we know so far:

  • The film will take place during World War I.
  • This will serve as an origin story for Diana Prince as she trains and grows to become Wonder Woman.
  • The main conflict would be Wonder Woman deciding between her seclusive Amazonian culture and her desire to help the world of men.
  • The main villain has not been officially revealed, but based on the trailer and rumors, Doctor Poison and Ares are our main candidates.


July 7: Spider-Man: Homecoming


What we know so far:

  • This will be the third reboot of the Spider-Man franchise and will follow Tom Holland’s debut as the web slinger in Captain America: Civil War.
  • The film takes place within the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
  • Peter Parker struggles in balancing high school with his new identity as a superhero.
  • Robert Downey Jr. will reprise his role as Iron Man and will serve as a mentor to Spider-Man.
  • Jon Favreau will also appear as Happy Hogan, Iron Man’s bodyguard.
  • Spider-Man will get a costume upgrade.
  • The main antagonist will be Vulture, but the film will also include other Spider-Man villains such as Shocker and Tinkerer.


September 4: The Inhumans


What we know so far:

  • What was once slated as a 2019 film has now been reformatted as a television series that will premiere its first two episodes in IMAX theaters.
  • No production, cast or plot details have been released.
  • The film will feature the Inhuman Royal Family.
  • Currently, Inhumans have been introduced in the MCU via Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. so it will be interesting how this new series will address the Inhuman situation on Earth.


November 3: Thor: Ragnarok


What we know so far:

  • The official plot has not been released, but if the comic book with the same title is to be followed, then Thor will have to deal with the Ragnarok event or the end of the world.
  • Thor: Ragnarok will set up Avengers: Infinity War and will leave long-lasting effects on the MCU much like Captain America: Winter Soldier and Civil War.
  • Thor will team up with The Hulk.
  • The movie will include elements from the “Planet Hulk” story arc from the comics.
  • The main villain will be Hera, the goddess of death.
  • As revealed by the post-credits scene in “Doctor Strange”, Stephen Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) will aid Thor and Loki in locating their father Odin on earth.


November 17: Justice League


What we know so far:

  • After Superman’s death, Batman and Wonder Woman recruit The Flash. Aquaman, and Cyborg to face Steppenwolf.
  • Superman will be in the film, but the capacity of which is unknown.
  • Steppenwolf’s goal is to recover the three mother boxes on earth, one of which was already shown in Batman v Superman during Cyborg’s origin montage.
  • Mera (Amber Heard) and Iris West (Kiersey Clemons) will debut.
  • The following characters have been confirmed: Lex Luthor, Alfred Pennyworth, Martha Kent, Commissioner Gordon, Nuidis Vulko, and Queen Hippolyta.
  • Parademons will also make an appearance.


TBA: The Punisher


What we know so far:

  • Jon Bernthal will reprise his role as The Punisher and we will se him deal with the loss of his family.
  • Jon Bernthal teased that we might see the origin story of The Punisher before the events of Daredevil Season 2.
  • The Punisher’s comic book sidekick, Microchip will be in the series.


TBA: The Defenders


What we know so far:

  • Daredevil (Charlie Cox), Jessica Jones (Krysten Ritter), Luke Cage (Mike Colter), and Iron Fist (Finn Jones) will finally team-up to take on an unidentified villain to be portrayed by Sigourney Weaver.
  • The following characters have been confirmed: Claire Temple, Elektra, Karen Page, Misty Knight, Colleen Wing, Trish Walker, Foggy Nelson, Stick, Jeri Hogarth, and Malcolm.
  • Though strongly rumored to make an appearance, The Punisher (Jon Bernthal) has not been officially announced.
  • The show will only have eight episodes.
